Yusuf Saei who worked as a curatorial intern on the project last summer has written a terrific article on the appropriation of the Palestinian Kufiya into mainstream fashion. The article was influenced by some very useful comments he made regarding what I had termed the Urban Chic of fashions incorporation of terrorist motifs. Check it out.
Here’s a link to the article:

I am very pleased at the way The Aesthetics of Terror is developing for its weekend in Berlin - March 13 -15, as part of EMBEDDED ART at the Academy of Art in Berlin. We are choreographing the multiples screen opportunities and the sophisticated technology they have put at the disposal of the show to create whole room installations for many of the artists and we will be posting images as soon as we have them.

I will also be curating the booth of Anita Beckers gallery from Frankfurt at Pulse. She felt the topic of Aesthetics was so important that she decided to make her booth more of an exhibition space than a normal market driven installation. I will be showing works there by Bjorn Melhus, Yves Netzhammer and Teresa Diehl
If you are at the fair = please stop by.

Thank you to all of you who have sent such wonderful messages regarding the web site and its potential as a platform for so many views and artists’ works.
I would urge you all to pass on the invitation to contribute to artists worldwide so we can examine these issues of representation or submergence or imagery from an truly international perspective

We are encouraging artists to submit new images for the virtual exhibition, and for consideration in upcoming exhibitions.
Tara de la Garza, xray of terror, c-print 24 x 36”
The most visible outcome of terrorism for most Americans are bag searches, security checks and ‘See Something Say Something’ posters which seem designed to annoy and instill fear. It has been proven that we cannot make a bomb from toothpaste and Gatorade, yet we are still subjected to long security lines and bullying by ‘security’ guards. Do we really think that these steps, rather than extended international diplomacy will work?

Rocked by a budget crisis, Brandeis University will close its Rose Art Museum this summer and sell off some of its significant collection
Following discussions with the museum last night, we are obviously very disappointed that the future of our project there is almost certainly in doubt. However, i want to acclaim the courage of Michael Rush in his desire to host the exhibition after I had left the Chelsea Art Museum.

... to the virtual arm of the exhibition
Aesthetics of Terror.
Curated by Manon Slome and Joshua Simon
This blog is aimed at establishing a visibility and a dialogue on art’s relationship to and its depiction of terror. It opens a possibility to exchange views, to post ideas and eventually to encourage the submission of additional work that can be added to the image gallery with the hope of creating a truly international view, much larger than the domain of an individual curator.
We would like to thank Tara de la Garza of Fluxus Creative for the design work on the site and Mia Eaton for building the site.
